PAY ATTENTION…YOUR LIFE (OR SOMEONE ELSE’S) COULD DEPEND ON IT

Driving and Texting

Importance of Paying Attention While Driving

Any month (any day, for that matter) is a good time to pay attention to your distracted driving habits.  If nothing else, you have to pay attention to all the others who aren’t paying attention as they swerve down the road.  The U.S. DOT & NHTSA even work together to sponsor a “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” Campaign in April as part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.  Distracted driving is becoming more of an issue and is also impacting our car insurance rates as insurers try to get a handle on it.

Who’s most likely to die in distraction-affected crashes?

Our 18-34 year olds, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).  In an article posted April 5, 2018 NHTSA Deputy Administrator, Heidi King, said, “Everyone should understand the very real dangers of texting while driving. Taking your eyes off the road for a moment is all it takes to cause a crash and change lives forever. Remember, no text or call is worth a life.”  Further, the article stated: “Currently, 47 states, DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands ban text messaging for all drivers. All but four have primary enforcement laws-an officer may cite a driver for using a hand-held cell phone without any other traffic offense taking place and be given a fine. Fifteen states, DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands prohibit all drivers from using hand-held cell phones while driving. Important to note: 38 states and DC ban all cell phone use by novice drivers, and 20 states and DC prohibit it for school bus drivers.”

Each person is responsible for his or her own actions.  The easiest thing to do as drivers is to put it down, out of the way. Make the time in your car your down time away from electronics.  You can even get apps to help! Check out these Distracted Driving Apps. Perhaps, picture the sad faces of those you love as they say what a great person you were and how they miss you. If that doesn’t do it, picture the faces of the other person’s family as they are forced to say it because of an accident you caused. These are the hard, potential consequences to the decision to pick it up.

Learn your state’s laws on cell phone use and texting while driving

All of our states (Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Texas and Virginia) are either primary enforcement laws, or have primary aspects to them. Primary laws allow law enforcement officers to ticket a driver or passenger without any other traffic offense taking place.
