Biking to Work Safely: Tips for Riders

Loving the active life in Portland, Indianapolis or Austin? Wherever you ride, there are great benefits to biking to work…fresh air, exercise, saving money on commutes but there is a downside also…safety.  In a car versus a bike crash, the car comes out ahead!  On those especially nice days and for those lucky enough to be able to put up their cars in nice weather and bike to work, here are a few reminders to keep you safe on the road:

Tips for Bikers: Staying Safe on the Road

  • Get your gear on: helmet, a light and reflective clothing, a strap to prevent pants getting caught in chain (if needed) and a loud horn.  There are so many neat gadgets available now online too.
  • Follow the rules of the road and use hand signals so drivers know what you’re intending.
  • Don’t get your drink on then bike. If planning a happy “happy hour” involving alcohol best not to bike impaired.

Some stats: Regardless of the season the least safe time on the road, according to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is 6:00 p.m. to 8:59 p.m.  Most pedal-cyclist fatalities occurred at non-intersections (61%); 3 percent occurred in bicycle lanes. Equal percentages (47%) of pedal-cyclist fatalities occurred in daylight crashes as during dark.

Drivers, we need to remember to watch out for bicycles and motorcycles as we’re on the road too.  Watch those blind spots!
