Pets in Cars, to Restrain or Not? –by Solo Insurance®

In a  recent social media post someone asked, “Am I the only one who makes my dogs ride in crates 100% of the time?”  I bet she’s not alone, but the “non-craters” exceed those who use secured crates.   Crates, especially when secured to the vehicle, add much safety for your dear ones; they offer protection to their passengers by limiting the amount of movement, impact and ability to run scared in the event of an accident.  Some crates are so tough that even if they get thrown from the vehicle, there’s a good chance they’ll stay intact limiting the amount of injury that can happen and help prevent the pet from running or flying off.  Consider crates as you would a car seat for a child.

Contact Solo Insurance® for more information about car insurance savings or to get a quote.

Other forms of restraints are also available.  Often geared to dogs, there are harness restraints that attach to the vehicle’s seatbelt system.  For smaller dogs there are car seats that have restraints in them as well; they raise the dog to be able to see out of the window.  For large breeds there are barriers that keep the dog in the back of an SUV.  Still a good idea for a harness that secures them in the vehicle.

A dangerous thing to do, is to let your pet ride in your lap.  It’s unsafe for them and for other humans on the road.  In some states, like Illinois, it is also a fineable offense.  Pets in laps cause distracted driving, may cause the driver to swerve unexpectedly or the poor pet could fall out of the window endangering themselves and others (potentially causing an accident as well).

There are many options and styles from which to choose.  Just do an internet search or go to your local pet store to see them.  The  key is keeping it easy and simple to latch them in.  Play it safe for you pet and yourself.  They trust you with their lives.  Be trustworthy and take care of them.
